BARBADOS INSTITUTE FOR MANAGEMENT AND PRODUCTIVITY (BIMAP) - MARKETING AND GENERAL MANAGEMENT FOR SMALL BUSINESS & EFFECTIVE PEOPLE MANAGEMENT SKILLS FOR SMALL/MEDIUM SIZED BUSINESSES

The Barbados Institute for Management and Productivity (BIMAP) is encouraging Small Business Owners and Managers to sign up for its “Marketing and General Management for Small Businesses” course. Topics include Marketing, Operations, Finance and Business Management.  The 10 week course will be held at BIMAP, Wildey, St. Michael, every Saturday, beginning May 23, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

INDUSTRIAL POLICY EXPERT

The Caribbean Community Secretariat is seeking a qualified individual to take up the post of Industrial Policy Expert in Guyana.  The successful candidate should have a Bachelors or Masters degree in Economics, Business Studies, Political Science, International Relations or any other relevant discipline.  Specialised training in Project Management and Report writing is also required.

CHILD CARE BOARD CHILD MONTH ACTIVITIES

The Child Care Board continues its activities to observe Child Month on Saturday, May 16 with an Exhibition and Fair.

It takes place at Tyrol Cot Heritage Village, Codrington Hill, St. Michael from 1:00 p.m.  A Children’s Expo showcasing the Board’s social services will be held on Wednesday, May 20, from 9:00 a.m. at Sheraton Mall and you’re also invited to view the film, “Secrets” to be shown on Sunday, May 24 at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre at 6:00 p.m.  Tickets may be purchased from the Child Care Board Headquarters, Fred Edghill Building, Cheapside, St. Michael.  

NIS – SELF EMPLOYED PERSONS

Before we go, here are a few reminders from the National Insurance Scheme… The NIS reminds Self Employed persons that although they are not eligible for employment injury or unemployment, they are entitled to sickness, maternity, invalidity, contributory old age pension, funeral grant and survivors’ benefits.  In addition, persons who have changed their names by marriage or otherwise, are required to submit relevant documents such as marriage and birth certificates, deed poll, identification card or passport to the National Insurance Office, Frank Walcott Building, Culloden Road, St. Michael. Childcare Board Child Month Activities

Barbadian children will take the spotlight, when the Child Care Board hosts a number of activities to mark Child Month.

Each day during the month of May, government day nurseries will be open to the public from 9:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

There will also be Open Days at the Board’s Headquarters at Fred Edghill Building, Cheapside, the City, on May 8th for primary schools, May 15th and 22nd for secondary schools; and May 29th for members of the public. Visits should be made between 10:00 a.m. and 12 noon and 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. 

On Wednesday, May 6th, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital will co-sponsor a Pediatric Workshop at the Hospital’s Auditorium from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

CXC Vacancies

The Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) Headquarters in Barbados currently requires several Data Entry Operators, for the period July 6th to 31st 2009.

Applicants must be able to handle a minimum of 135 keystrokes per minute on the numeric key pad or computer.

Persons who have registered for the May/June 2009 CSEC/CAPE examinations are not eligible. 

Applications accompanied by a full curriculum vitae, including the names, addresses and telephone or fax numbers of two referees, should be sent to, the Registrar, Caribbean Examinations Council, The Garrison, St. Michael, BB11158, Barbados. DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - ESSAY COMPETITION

The Department of Emergency Management’s Essay Competition deadline has been extended to Friday, June 19th. The competition is open to all Class 4 Primary School students.  The topic is “The Importance of Volunteers in a Disaster.”  Essays must be about 300 words and written in pen.  Entries should be submitted to the Department of Emergency Management, Warrens Industrial Park, St. Michael, by Friday, June 19th 2009. Maurice Byer Diabetic Poetry Competition

The Maurice Byer Polyclinic in St. Peter in association with Sagicor General Insurance Company, invites Primary Schools from the clinics catchment area to enter its Diabetic Poetry and Poster competitions for students ages 9 to 11.

Each school may submit a maximum of two poems and two posters, the content of which must be related to diabetic causes, treatment or complications.

Poems must be no more than three verses and each verse should be no more than ten lines.  They should be typed on 8 1/2 X 11 sized paper, and four copies should be forwarded to the attention of Health Sister Marcia Beckles-Moore at the Maurice Byer Polyclinic on or before Monday, June 1st 2009 by 4:30 p.m.

Posters must be submitted by Monday, June 8th, 2009 and should be no larger than 30X30 square and bear the name of the student or students, name of school and age group.

YOUTH AMBASSADORS WANTED

The Ministry of Youth, Family and Sports invites applications from interested persons to serve as CARICOM Youth Ambassadors for 2009.

Candidates should be resident nationals of Barbados between the ages of 16 and 30 who are actively involved in a youth organisation at the national level.  The main duties of the Ambassadors are advocacy, outreach and peer-to-peer education. Ambassadors also contribute to technical and policymaking meetings convened by CARICOM Institutions and partner agencies.

NEW ZEALAND SCHOLARSHIP

The Government of New Zealand is offering Scholarships to Barbadian citizens under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship plan for the academic year beginning February, 2010.

Applicants for PHD study should hold at least an Upper Second Class Honours Degree while applicants for other programmes should have a Bachelor’s Degree with at least a ‘B’ average. The scholarships are open to candidates who graduated from the University of the West Indies within the last 5 years.

ANTIQUE FURNITURE EXHIBITION

The Barbados National Committee of the International Council of Museums is hosting an authentic Barbadian antique furniture exhibition. Entiled, ‘From the Antique to the Contemporary: Barbados Furniture 1680-2009”, the free exhibition continues Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Lancaster Great House, St James, until Saturday, May 30.

There are currently several career opportunities available at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.  These are Chief Executive Officer, Director of Medical Services, Procurement Manager and Director of Human Resources.  The position of Chief Executive Officer requires a Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration or Health Care and at least 10 years management experience.  Candidates for the post of Director of Medical Services should be fully registered medical practitioners with postgraduate qualifications.  Suitably qualified persons may also apply for the post of Procurement Manager.  Applicants must have a degree in Management, Business Administration and at least five years experience or a diploma or Associate Degree and at least seven years experience.  Persons applying for the post of Director of Human Resources must have a post graduate qualification in Human Resources or a related field.
